Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay born August 24, 72 in Long Beach, CA. DuVernay began to develop her artistic and creative talents as a child because of her Aunt Denise. Her aunt, a night-shift nurse, let her explore art and literature as well as the theater in the daylight. DuVernay quickly became enthralled with that 1961 West Side Story film. DuVernay discovered by watching her mother's example that art can be an activist vehicle. The father of DuVernay's remembered watching the Civil Rights movement's historic march through the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in adjacent Selma Alabama. The DuVernay family visited Selma over the summer and was inspired to create a film on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In the year 1990, DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. Upon graduation, DuVernay studied at the University of California Los Angeles and earned degrees both in English as well as African American study. DuVernay was in college at the time she began to become interested in production for broadcast journalism. She began her career as an intern with CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was assigned to the watch and search the home for a specific Jury member. She was disappointed by the journalism assignments she was assigned and chose to change to the world of public relations. DuVernay was employed by a tiny studio as a Junior Publicist shortly after graduating from college. She was promoted to the position and set up her own PR company called The DuVernay Agency in 1999. The company launched a number of promotions and lifestyle channels, including Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
